and the old age psychiatry service enjoys a good working relationship with the Department of Medicine for the Elderly. The Academic Department of Old Age Psychiatry is also based at St Charles’.
Weekly psychotherapy supervision is offered to all trainees, and participation is mandatory.

Part I/Part II post in old age psychiatry
This day hospital serving the elderly of North-East Westminster was opened in 1980 as the first element of a comprehensive district psychiatric service for the elderly. It is an activity based day hospital catering for both those with functional illnesses and those with organic problems requiring assessment and treatment. Patients are mainly referred back to the community, including specialist day centres for the confused elderly. Ongoing psychiatric support is offered by an out-patient group.
 The trainee will attend St Charles’ Hospital Journal Club which is held on a Friday lunchtime and also participate in the St Charles’ on-call rota.

Part II posts only – psychotherapy
The trainee will take on 4-5 individual patients (one for focal therapy and others for 1 year): this work will be supervised individually and in small groups. Trainee will also participate as a co-therapist in a weekly psychotherapy group, which is supervised in a workshop. The SHO will also have supervised experience in assessing patients referred to the service. Experience in short-term work with adolescents is also available.

Experience in Child & Adolescent Psychiatry includes assessment and treatment of children with a range of psychiatric disorders, paediatric liaison and opportunities for supervised experience in family therapy, individual psychotherapy and behavioural therapy and psychopharmacological treatments.

 6. NORTHWICK PARK HOSPITAL, Watford Road, Harrow, Middlesex. (Tel: 0181 864 3232)
Part I and Part II posts: acute adult psychiatry, old age psychiatry
This is a busy District General Hospital with posts in general, old age and child psychiatry (although the child psychiatry post is attached to another Trust (see below). Some outpatients are integrated into the hospital whilst others are held at peripheral sites including GP Surgeries and a Mental Health Resource Centre.
 Liaison psychiatry constitutes much of the training with regular supervision groups provided by one of the consultants. Old Age Psychiatry works in close collaboration with the Department of Geriatric Medicine. There are three community based day hospitals for the elderly patients, and the old age service provides opportunities for much outreach work.
There is an Associate Specialist in Psychotherapy and several of the consultants are engaged in research work.

APPOINTMENT TO PROGRAMMES

 

Applicants will be asked at interview to rank their choices of training programmes within London.  Those who are appointed to training within London will be appointed to their highest available choice depending on their ranking from the selection process.

 

Training Arrangements

 

Posts are allocated in consultation with the programme director, local tutors and trainee representative based on training needs and, as far as possible, individual circumstances.    The aim is to give each CT1-3 trainee during their time in the scheme, a variety of experience to meet their training needs.

 

As a general guide, trainees new to psychiatry will be allocated to adult psychiatry or old age psychiatry posts.  Sub-specialty posts will normally be available for CT2-3 trainees.

 

Formal teaching is provided as follows:

 

1. All trainees are required to attend an MRCPsych course;

2. Two academic afternoons per year, organised by the scheme;

3. Local teaching at each hospital site organised by local tutors;

4. Critical appraisal courses, OSCEs, PMP/IPA exam practice organised centrally by the scheme and at some sites.

 

Induction Programme

 

There will be a mandatory induction programme for all trainees, starting on the first day of each rotation.

 

MRCPsych Course

 

The MRCPsych course is organised on a half-day release basis during term-time.

 

Workplace-Based Assessment

 

The progress of trainees is closely monitored.  This includes weekly individual educational supervision with their educational supervisor and regular contact with local tutor and biannual reviews with the programme director.  Workplace-based assessments will form an intrinsic part of your training.                              more
