ST ALBANS
This is a new community based service in purpose built facilities providing excellent training in general psychiatry and sub-specialties with an emphasis on community and multi-disciplinary working. SHOs in general adult psychiatry are based in the inpatient facility at Albany Lodge/St Julians, in St Albans. The SHOs in old age psychiatry are based at Logandene, Hemel Hempstead and Lambourne Grove. Other posts are community based in either St Albans or Hemel Hempstead. Regular teaching sessions at Albany Lodge and other locations ensure that community based trainees do not become isolated from their colleagues.
 Trainees participate in either the inpatient unit on call rota (1 in 8 with prospective cover) or the community rota (1 in 6). The post in child psychiatry and psychotherapy is for one year.
 Doctors’ clinical workload is shared by an Associate Specialist (Dr Samarasinghe) and staff grade psychiatrists who also contribute to the on call rotas. Limited single or married accommodation may be available by prior arrangement. There is an excellent Psychiatric Library in St Albans with access to the internet, Medline and other electronic data bases. The trainees may also use library facilities at St Albans City Hospital and Hemel Hempstead General Hospital.

LISTER HOSPITAL
 This is an area of three towns with surrounding villages and countryside (catchment population 180,000).
 The mental health service is part of an acute and community Trust with inpatient facilities at the DGH. There are three community mental health centres and a community substance misuse clinic locally with multidisciplinary teams. The service is community orientated with good links with social services and local GPs. The Child and Family Psychiatric Service has clinics in Stevenage, Hitchin and Baldock and provides a liaison service for the general hospital children’s service.
 The Old Age Psychiatry Service is based at Lister with a purpose built day hospital and assessment ward.
 On call duties provide cover for the Accident & Emergency Department and general wards with a liaison services nurse developing day time support for this. On call rota is 1 in 6.
